Taking Care of Your Veneers

Follow these useful tips for keeping your new restorations clean and beautiful.

Here at Superstition Mountain Dental in Gold Canyon, AZ, we want our patients to have beautiful smiles that they can enjoy for years to come. In order to maintain healthy, beautiful veneers, here are some tips for how to keep them looking and feeling their best,

Brush and Floss Just as You Normally Would

When it comes to your dental hygiene you can treat your veneers just like you would natural teeth, which means brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day. Even though a veneer cannot develop decay, this doesn’t mean that the natural tooth under it cannot. Therefore, it’s even more important that you practice good oral hygiene. This may also be the time to consider upgrading to an electric toothbrush to make sure that you are giving your teeth and gums a meticulous cleaning each and every time.

Use a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush

It’s also important that you are using the proper dental tools to keep your smile healthy. This includes using fluoride toothpaste, which will promote strong, healthy enamel, and also using a soft-bristled toothbrush. While you may believe that a toothbrush with hard bristles provides a tougher clean, these toothbrushes can actually wear away your veneers and damage the polish. You will also want to avoid certain toothpaste with abrasive ingredients that could scratch your new restorations. If you aren’t sure which products are safe to use on your veneers, ask our Gold Canyon, AZ, cosmetic dentists first.

Ditch Nail Biting (and Other Bad Habits)

If you are someone who bites their nails or often uses their teeth as tools, these are two habits you will want to avoid doing if you want to keep your veneers safe and healthy. While veneers are made from porcelain, an extremely durable material, it is still possible to pull the veneers off or chip them when chewing ice, biting your nails or using your teeth to pop off a bottle cap.

Limit Dark Foods and Drinks

Another benefit to veneers is that porcelain is a stain-resistant material; however, the adhesive that holds the veneers to your teeth is not. Therefore, you will still want to avoid dark food and drinks such as red wine, coffee, tea, tomato sauce, and mustard if you want to maintain a beautiful smile. If you do consume any of these offending foods or drinks, make sure to brush your teeth immediately after.
